Zero Emission Fuel Specialist at FortisBC Energy Inc:

You're looking at a series of four images showing how sunlight is being used to split water molecules generating hydrogen with a photoreactor. Rice University engineers have created a device that turns sunlight into hydrogen with record-breaking efficiency. It combines next-generation halide perovskite semiconductors with electrocatalysts in a single, durable, cost-effective and scalable device.
According to a study published in Nature Communications, the device achieved a 20.8% solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency.
How does that stack up against solar panels? Though most commercial panels have efficiencies from 15% to 20%, researchers have developed photovoltaic cells with efficiencies approaching 50%. The energy conversions are different, but you get the point.
The differentiating factor is this technology passively creates a fuel that can be stored, where electricity needs to be used once it's created. Plus, this new method is in its infancy and I would hope it has the potential to become more efficient.
